If the weather forecasters are right, the big freeze is set to stay with us right up to Christmas. A severe weather warning remains in place for tomorrow.

After a difficult rush hour this morning, traffic has been able to move about on most of the main roads, but as happened earlier this year, many of the side roads are extremely dangerous, as the fresh snow has fallen on compacted snow and ice.

Avon and Somerset police are advising motorists only to undertake journeys that are absolutely necessary.

Some bus services have been affected, mainly by delays, although some routes have had to be altered due to the icy conditions. Service 20 is unable to use Redcatch Hill and has been diverted up the Wells Road and along Broad Walk. For the latest updates, visit First's website, or call its customer services on 0845 606 4446.

The council has decided that the rubbish and food waste collections will be suspended until further notice, as the trucks are unable to negotiate many of the side roads. If you were due to have rubbish collected this week, the council has advised that you put it out as normal and it will be collected when services resume.

Yes, our grit bin is empty now after the initial snowfall at the weekend and calls to the council today have failed to obtain a date when it'll be filled again, but then that's only a few days, three YEARS is a disgrace. And why do so few people clear the pavement in front of their house? if everyone did that for themselves or perhaps their elderly neighbours too, it would make it a lot easier for pedestrians to get around at least. Some of our pavements are lethal.

I think that driving conditions would have been improved if the grit bins in Bedminster had *all* been filled after last winters bad weather. There are very few in the Bedminster area as it is and a number have been empty for years. I did raise this with the council last year and a few were indeed filled but many others were not. The one on the corner of Sion Rd has been empty for three years at least. As a result of this, for the second winter in a row the side streets particularly the steeper ones off North Street and Stackpool road are once again lethal to drivers and pedestrians. Today I was witness to at least seven people taking a tumble and an elderly lady requiring an ambulance on North St.
