This pub has now changed hands and the new owners, who are also the chefs, have gone for an unusual take on the typical pub fare: they’ve taken it back a few centuries. You might want to ask the waitress to explain some of the dishes to you but the flavours are great and it seems to be proving popular.

I was tempted in here when I found out that the chef worked with Jamie Oliver at Fifteen, as I spend a lot of time i East London and loved the restaurant. And this is a similar example of how food should be done. The restaurant is the perfect size, and is well-decorated in fresh, unusual colours. The food is absolutely lovely, very traditional but classier than pub grub. And you have to try the lemon tart!

The Star and Dove in St. Lukes Road, Totterdown, is a quality gastropub with a great atmosphere. The menu offers a host of British favourites, given a gastronomic twist scotch egg with red onion chutney, for example. Theres a comprehensive wine list available, alongside some very good ales and beers.
