The event was one of over 200 taking place across Bristol and the rest of the country in an attempt to break the world records for planting the most trees in multiple locations and the most trees planted by hand by 100 people at a single site within a single hour. As part of National Tree Week, Breathing Places and its partners invited thousands of people to plant as many trees as possible in the hour between 11am and 12 noon today.
The existing world record for trees planted by hand by any number of people within a single hour is 653,143.
In Dame Emily Park, 20 people – from toddlers to grandparents – took up spades and helped to plant a total of 58 trees and shrubs along one of the park’s perimeter fences. The trees planted were a selection of hedgerow plants, including spindleberry, hawthorn, blackthorn, buckthorn, hazel and holly. As they grow, they will provide food and shelter for a variety of wildlife, including butterflies, bees and birds.
