Bristol Crown Court heard that heroin addict Tahir Mahmood had been cleaning up his act, but was drawn back to drugs after the death of his father.
The 43-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of possessing heroin and another of possession with intent to supply.
Mark Hollier, prosecuting, said: "On August 28, 2009, police executed a search warrant at his home. He was not at home, but seven loaded syringes with heroin solution were found as well as electronic scales contaminated with heroin."
He said police continued to look for Mahmood, and he was stopped on September 24 in St Paul's. When they searched his car they found a 27g block of heroin.
Mahmood told them he had just bought it for £600 and that it was for his own use.
Catherine Spedding said Mahmood has been a heroin user for a number of years and had managed to conquer his addiction before.
Ms Spedding said: "It is clearly something he wishes to conquer. He has the motivation, he has high hopes for the future.
"He wants to make a proper life for himself and his son, and get employment."
Sentencing Mahmood to two years and nine months in prison, the Honourable Mr Justice Nigel Davis said: "Two good things can be said on your behalf – your plea of guilt and the fact that there are signs that you are trying to confront your dependency on heroin.
"But I also have to consider the wider interest of the public. You had a significant amount of drugs in your possession. You were going to supply it to others, you were simply dragging them into the consumption of drugs."
