Today's postal strike was dramatically called off after a deal was agreed just hours before it was due to start.

The agreement between Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union (CWU) last night means postal services will go ahead as normal until at least after Christmas.

The 3,500 postal workers due to strike today and Monday at the Bristol Mail Centre in Filton, the South West Distribution Centre at Severn Beach and 40 depots across the Bristol area will now go back to work after the row over jobs, pay, conditions and pensions.

They face a mountain of undelivered mail, built up after almost five months of strike action. But Dave Wilshire, secretary of the Bristol and district CWU, said the two million undelivered items in Bristol's post rooms could be cleared in a week – if professional posties tackle it.

Royal Mail's managing director Mark Higson said a "sensible agreement" had been reached. The CWU has also put legal action over agency workers on hold.
