Idiotic abusive drivers

I MAGINE you are out on Bristol’s roads with your window down and a screaming driver in another car starts shouting abuse at you for no reason, other than he and his mates think it’s funny. Imagine they try to startle you so you swerve and crash.

Wouldn’t you think this was dangerous driving? You’d probably report it, because you wouldn’t want such dangerous behaviour on our roads.

Sadly, this is just the sort of abusive and dangerous behaviour that some young men in motor cars show towards cyclists.

They attempt to deliberately frighten a passing cyclist by shouting out of the rear window, and try to get them to come off their bike.

Shouldn’t the police be focusing on stopping these kinds of behaviours on our roads, rather than catching and fining silly cyclists who jump red lights? Incidentally, one reason for cyclists doing this when it is clear is that they are seeking to maintain momentum and conserve energy – riding a bike is a different energy exchange to a motor vehicle.

It would be great if police could set up some decoy cyclists to see if they can ensnare these abusive drivers. A high-publicity prosecution would then deter others.

James Wilson, Bedminster.

This is not a knock the cyclist comment, here comes the but, I have been in a situation when leaving the traffic lights at green, turning right on to the main road blind I was confronted with a cyclist jumping a red light., not travelling slowly either. Luckily for him I was aware that cyclist do this at this junction so was able to stop, otherwise I would have hit him into next week. He was lucky guy that day.

Everybody needs to obey the law and the rules of the road. It doesn't matter whether they are a driver, a cyclist or a pedestrian. Laws and rules are on the whole there for a reason and that is to keep everybody safe. Pedestrians need to realise that wearing an iPod or using a mobile phone does not make them invulnerable and that big lump of metal called a bus will hurt them when it hits them after they have blundered blindly off the pavement into its path. Similarly, walking into cycle lanes without looking isn't exactly bright either. Cyclists need to realise that jumping red lights might conserve energy and momentum...until they hit a car that has legitimately moved due to the lights being in its favour. Ditto, riding through red lights when pedestrians are legitimately crossing is breaking the law. Drivers need to pay attention to both cyclists and pedestrians and not drive like they are trying to win a Grand Prix or so close to cyclists they might as well offer them a lift because they are already almost in the passenger seat. Oh and anybody being abusive, whichever group they are in is not in if other road users are legitimately and safely going about their business.

Don't think the police should be focusing on that sort of behaviour RATHER than 'silly' cyclists jumping lights - as well as, surely?! As a driver, I'd love to try that excuse: "The road was clear so I ignored the red light in order not to lose momentum and conserve energy" but don't suppose I'd get very far with that! Don't worry about conserving energy, 'silly' cyclists should be doing their bit to conserve their lives and obey the rules of the road, the lights are red for a reason.

Perhaps your remarks would be taken a little more seriously if you didn't use terms such as "nutters". I presume you're using that word because you have a poor vocabulary. You justify your own bad behaviour as a cyclist, use derogatory terminology and blame the police all in one posting. Congratulations on scraping the very bottom of the barrel.
