Hundreds invited to record shimmy

A BEDMINSTER street was brightened up by the sight of women belly-dancing to promote a world record attempt.
Dancers shimmied outside Cafe Sazz and offered passers-by tea to encourage them to support a sponsored shimmy in aid of Breast Cancer Care in January.
Kay Hocking, a belly dance enthusiast, decided a mass shimmy would be a great way for women to have fun, raise money for charity and attempt to get into record books.
About 550 participants would break the record but Mrs Hocking is hoping to double the number and raise more money for the charity that supports people with breast cancer.
The event on January 30 is open to women of all ages and sizes who can enjoy the atmosphere of the hafla – a Middle Eastern dance party – and purchase items at a souk that will be set up at University of the West of England’s conference and exhibition centre.
Mrs Hocking, of Yate, said: “No experience is necessary. All that we need to do to get into the Guinness Book of Records is a small routine of about five minutes. My dance teacher, Maria Krajnik-Dachraosi is going to be there and she is going to teach a routine that involves a lot of shimmying and some arm movements.
“It is very good for people and those with bad backs needn’t worry as it will help strengthen the muscles.”
Different types of dance will also be on offer at the fund-raising event so women can learn other techniques and moves.
Every dancer who registers for the fundraiser will receive a pink coin belt to wear for the sponsored shimmy and a goody bag.
Registration for the event is £12 or £10 each for individuals who take part as a group of six or more. All sponsorship money will go to Breast Cancer Care.
Mrs Hocking, 57, said: “It is something different to do and I think it will be a really good time for everyone involved.”
