Furniture on the menu as Bristol cafe packs away the knives and forks

A Frenchman who opened a cafe in Bristol has converted it into a furniture shop after just two months of trading.

Jean Pierre Paats-Williams opened up Engistland Limited in Bedminster Parade earlier this year as a cafe selling a few items of vintage and restored antique furniture on the side.

But the 61-year-old said the furniture proved so popular with customers, he decided to pack away the knives and forks and transform the eatery into a labyrinth of wooden tables, chairs, chests and wardrobes.

Now the shop is full to bursting with furniture and the only evidence of its former use is an abandoned sink and a fridge now displaying honeys, jams, dressings and sauces for sale.

Mr Paats-Williams, who is from Paris and has previously worked in London, New York and Estonia, said: "I opened it as a cafe and had gone through the process of getting a full licence from the council.

"Then I started to sell a bit of furniture but I sold so much of it that I decided to stop the cafe three weeks ago.

"People come here from Clifton, Bath and Clevedon because there is a good choice and it's well-priced.

"I get the stock from house clearances and from retired antique dealers. We also have customers bringing in items and we sell quite a lot on commission.

"I chose to set up in Bedminster because it's an up-and-coming area."

I cannot imagine why and Frenchman would want to settle in UK,  who did choose well though when he chose Bredminster. I wish him well, sounds flexible guy so he should do well.

I visited this shop/cafe a couple of times, it was interesting but there was something about the idea of eating food close to possibly dead people's things that made me lose my enthusiasm for eating and drinking in there. But anything new in Bedminster is good, and since the area itself is so eccentric, the cafe junk shop idea does kind of fit.
