Students and frog’s legs are typically found together in the science lab but not at a Bristol-based college where the French delicacy is just one of the dishes being served in the college restaurant!

It follows the appointment of new chef Darren Rawles at S&B Automotive Academy in Bedminster who, since his arrival, has added a number of ‘specials’ to the menu in support of the college’s equality and diversity policy.

To encourage the students to try new things the specials on offer include food from around the world such as snails and frog’s legs, sweet and sour chicken and a rogan josh curry along with the salad bar, Cornish pasties and jacket potatoes.

Darren’s unusual array of dishes is in line with the ‘Every Child Matters’ government initiative which outlines ways in which to improve the lives of children and young people aged between 0-19.

With the majority of students aged 16-19, the college is encouraged to help those in its care stay safe, make a positive contribution, achieve economic well-being and be healthy and eating healthy, freshly prepared food is seen as one way to achieve this.

The academy is one of the best in the country for automotive apprenticeships, offering a range of courses from motorcycle maintenance to vehicle body repair. It is also the leading provider of Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) courses which provides motor industry workers with vital qualifications now required by the industry.

Darren said: “The new specials are part of the college’s commitment to supply healthy options to its students and encourage them to experiment with the food they try.

“Research has shown that a healthy diet leads to a healthier mind and body. Eating well also produces higher energy levels, vitality and a greater concentration.

“It’s really enjoyable to watch students and staff trying food that they would never usually eat and watching the surprise on their faces when they actually enjoy it.

“It is proven that a healthy diet improves the mind and the body especially in young adults. The new menu should improve the student’s concentration, energy levels and will defiantly give them something to talk about with their friends!”

S & B Automotive Academy is also planning to build an ‘al fresco’ dining area at its Bedminster site to coincide with the new healthy menu and the appointment of the new chef.

The academy has been offering training in Bristol for 30 years and now helps 700 students gain motor industry apprenticeships every year.
