Dawn Primarolo Elected As Deputy Speaker

Our local MP Dawn Primarolo has been elected as a Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, in the first-ever election for the post.
Ms Primarolo, who held government posts from 1997 until Labour lost the General Election last month, will see a considerable increase in her salary: on top of her backbencher’s wage of £65,738 she will now receive an additional £41,337.40.
Her new role will involve many hours a day sitting in the Speaker’s chair, selecting questions from MPs and keeping order in the chamber.
It also means that she will lose the right to ask questions herself. Despite this, Ms Primarolo doesn’t think that her new role will mean she is less effective as the MP for Bristol South.
In an interview with the Evening Post, she said: “This doesn't stop me having a political view or having the view publicly, it doesn't stop me campaigning or raising issues with ministers.
"I can't sign Early Day Motions or be partisan in the Chamber, but I will still be there listening to my constituents, going to meetings in the constituency and campaigning.
"I don't give up being a member of the Labour party, or being involved in party policy."

Your right Sidderley it's a bit rich when her ex husband and daughter are more active than she is.. Let's hope they claim expenses from her £41,337.40 extra pay.

ReportHow can she be less effective as the MP for Bristol South. She only turns up here when there's a camera pointing at her. Her ex husband & her daughter are more active in the area than she is.

ReportDo I remember correctly wasn't she part of the government that got us into this mess? She was lucky to keep her seat and now has the brass neck to take a £41,337.40 pay rise to sit in a chair, call out a few names and shout order, order. Nice work if you can get it. I don't suposse I'm likely to see her on the street anytime but for sure I will not be shaking her hand.

ReportYeah, in fairness, it would be hard for her to be any LESS effective than she already is! :)

ReportSo I assume that her constituents can expect to see even less of her now? Not that this is possible as appearances would be in negative figures judging from her past record.
Oh...and £41,337.40? That's almost three times more than a great many of her constituents take home in a year. Utterly obscene!
