Another former Woolworths store in Bristol is to be brought back to life, as a pound shop.

The red-and-white shop in East Street, Bedminster, has stood empty since it closed due to the recession last Christmas.

Now it is being refitted to become another familiar high street name, Pound Land.

The shop is due to be opened by Coronation Street's Becky next Saturday.

From 10am soap actress Katherine Kelly will be giving out 50 £1 vouchers, which can get shoppers anything from a pair of sunglasses to a football.

The store is set to open for business at 8.30am with other give aways planned and in-store DJ.

The Bedminster branch is the latest in a number of the former Woolworths in the Bristol area that have reused.

Most have become budget or charity shops in the last six months.

The branch in Kingswood has become a British Heart Foundation furniture shop; in Yate, fashion retailer Peacocks has moved in; Hartcliffe was reopened as a What Stores Factory Outlet Stores took over in Nailsea and the Blackboy Hill shop is set to become an indoor market.

The branch in Broadmead Galleries has been covered up with white boards.

The reopening represents good news for East Street, which saw a Bristol business close during the summer.

Quinns café bar at the West Street end of the shopping area has ceased trading and the premises is being advertised to let.

Quinns was run by Patrick Quinn, who offered a range of attractions to try and bring the punters in, including Nintendo Wii on a big screen TV.

He took over the premises in late 2007, which used to be The Bell pub.

The café bar was featured in the Evening Post in February offering homemade meals for just £1.99 in an attempt to beat the credit crunch.

Poundland trading director David Coxon said: "Poundland offers exceptional value on everyday essentials to over 2.5 million customers each week.

"The £1 price hasn't changed since we opened our first store almost 20 years ago.

"Our current customers love us and we are sure the local Bedminster shoppers will love us too."
