Art? That's a load of old rubbish

A sculptor who transforms rubbish into creatures is showcasing his work in Bristol.

Barry Lewis' exhibition Monsters was launched at the Grant Bradley Gallery in Bedminster Parade on Saturday and will run until February 27.

The artist, who grew up in South Wales, explores mountainsides, lakes and rivers, looking for waste materials to transform into remarkable creatures.

He said: "Someone might chuck a bike into a river, polluting it, then I'll pull it out and turn part of it into a gigantic metal fish.

"Often a bit of rubbish is the beginning of a whole animal."

Mr Lewis' creations range from birds with fish knives for feathers to a giant scorpion made from reclaimed metals.

Forty pieces of art, including a selection of metallic animal heads mounted on plaques, will be on show in the exhibition.

Mr Lewis has taken his sculptures to the Glastonbury Festival and some of his larger pieces can be found in Bristol's Exchange Hall foyer, where his animals guard the entrance to St Nicholas Market.
