Vacation or staycation?

Have you booked a holiday abroad for this summer or have the difficult economic times we hear so much about forced you to re-think your plans?

Another Roman holiday would be nice!
Staring wistfully in the windows of Thomas Cook and First Choice Travel in East Street earlier this week, I noticed there were still plenty of bargains to be had and if I can save a bit harder this month, I might well be going back there to book one.
As nice as a city break in Europe would be, however, I need a Plan B so I’ve also been looking at what’s available nearer to home over the coming weeks.
Fortunately, there are plenty of things to do locally – here’s a few of the things I hope to get to this summer.
The Harbour Festival is in full swing at the moment – ironically, I can hear the celebrations as I sit here typing this! Ships, boats, music, dance, entertainment, markets and my personal favourite, the fireworks. I shall be off in a moment to catch the display at 10pm tonight.
If you haven’t had the chance to get down there today either, don’t worry, there is a full day of events again tomorrow. Have a look at the listings here.
Another place I’m determined to visit again soon is Windmill Hill City Farm. We may be in the heart of the city, but one of the great things about Bedminster is that you don’t have to go far to get back to nature. Tucked away on Philip Street, just a quick step away from Bedminster Parade and East Street, Windmill Hill City Farm seems a world apart and an enchanting place to visit whatever your age.
One of the best days out I had recently was with a group of friends, just catching up over a picnic in Victoria Park. I ate and drank too much, of course, but that’s what holidays are about, whether you’re on vacation or staycation!
And a ‘don’t miss’ on my staycation will Michael McIntyre’s appearance at the Tobacco Factory on Wednesday 25th or Thursday 26th August.
What will you be doing? Any suggestions welcome!

Yes a holiday in Europe would be good, a nice city break. We were in Europe earlier this year and it was expensive. You are right we tend not to look at thing nearer to home and the Habour Festival is a good start and we can walk around with the dog!
