The View From Parson Street Nose

I was on my way to a dental appointment; the pouring rain had slowed the traffic to an absolute standstill so I passed the time by watching the commuters traipsing past my car along Coronation Road.

One particular couple caught my attention. He was all bound up in an arctic style ski jacket and was wearing sturdy-looking waterproof boots while she teetered along on impossibly high heels.

She was wearing skin-tight pedal pushers and a sleeveless jerkin that wouldn't have kept out a cough.

But to add to the picture she was holding a small black umbrella mostly over his head while her own blonde locks were getting drenched.

Upon reaching the entrance to the jungle bridge to town they engaged in a passionate snog, disengaged then waved goodbye and he disappeared over the bridge - with the umbrella!

As soon as he vanished, quick as a flash she dumped her bag on the ground, kicked off her high heels, planted her feet into a comfy pair of trainers she had extracted from the bag, then she whipped out an anorak, pulled the hood up, zipped up the coat, stuffed her stilettos into the bag, then stomped away down the road as snug as a bug in the proverbial rug.

I watched her disappear in my rear view mirror and it was only a beep from white van man behind me that startled me out of my reverie and I drove six feet until I had to stop again.

Then I wondered - whatever happened to feminism? Did I miss something? Come on girls, buck your ideas up. If it’s raining - wear your anoraks with pride!

Poor girl, it seems to be about how you look not what you are. I remember a friend once saying to me after a falling out with her partner 'I just want to be cherised' I'm sure that girl would understand that sentiment.
