Sainsbury’s package of support measures for East Street

Sainsbury’s has said that if its proposals for a new store at Ashton Gate receive planning permission from Bristol City Council, it would work closely with traders and community groups to develop initiatives that would support local businesses.
-
What do you think of Sainsbury's suggested support measures for traders in East Street, Bedminster?
These are its examples and suggestions for East Street – what do you think of them? Some of these ideas will be familiar to local people and traders already actively involved in improving East Street.
Street scene
- Initiate a clean-up programme to tackle unsightly or dirty areas, including the trade waste bin areas
- Recruit an ‘Environmental Ranger’ to carry out quick cleaning, maintenance and repair jobs. The ranger’s role would also cover North Street and they would record and report bigger cleaning issues or damage [presumably to the council’s existing street environment teams]
- Dalby Avenue underpass – clean, re-paint and improve lighting and maintenance
Policing and crime
- Discuss opportunities for a police portacabin to be placed in or near East Street’s pedestrianised area, to be used as a base for the Neighbourhood Police Team
- Develop a broader retail crime-fighting initiative to address retail and associated crime, such as a radio network, Pubwatch scheme and information sharing
Empty shops
- Improve the appearance of empty shops by using for them for promotional means, public art or information window displays
- Start a campaign to market vacant units, working with landlords and agents
Displays
- Develop ranges of floral displays
- Provide funding to help maintain attractive annual Christmas light displays
Promotion
- Develop a website dedicated to promoting the convenience of local community shops and services in Bedminster, to encourage local shopping and include special offers, events and promotions
- Consider a loyalty card scheme for participating businesses, perhaps in conjunction with stores on North Street…
- Or, a voucher scheme instead
- Install decorative/promotional vertical banners to lampposts promoting the local facilities and community spirit under a Bedminster town centre brand
Events
- Develop a programme of events to generate additional footfall, for example, live music, seasonal events, children’s competitions and entertainment, and community safety days
- Investigate possibility of developing a range of markets for Bedminster, such as farmers’ markets, bric-a-brac and second-hand book stalls

yep well said, the traders could help themselves as far as the rubbish situation goes. But everytime I walk past that police pod in Asdas there's no police in there. I often see them further up East St, just parked up, which is good and they're a nice team. Who's paying for the things like the website then? Sainsburys will have the money to do all the things the traders want but I expect the council wont have any spare cash with all the cuts. It woudl be good if Sainsburys could pick up the bill for these things instead.

ReportA lot of these things are already being tackled. We have a police pod in the ASDA car park, a website is under development, there is a radio network, pubwatch and a trader's association. Are Sainsbury's saying they're going to pick up the bill to develop these strategies in a meaningful way or just repeating what the trader's and community have been saying for years?
The trader's "waste area" is immediately solved if the fruit market use their extensive storage space & if the manager at Stan Butt's parks his car in a garage and not his store room.
