Bristol City Council planning officers have decided to recommend outline planning applications by Sainsbury’s for a new foodstore at Ashton Gate, and to redevelop the site of the existing store at Winterstoke Road for housing and business use, for approval.

The report prepared by council planning officers ahead of the committee meeting next week states: “Members have resolved that that consent should be granted and, subject to the completion of the Legal Agreement in respect of the site, the decision is expected to be issued in the near future.”

Sainsbury’s have agreed that if consent were to be granted for the proposed supermarket at Ashton Gate, they would sign a legal agreement to abandon the established retail use rights of the existing supermarket at Winterstoke Road.

Jamie Baker, Sainsbury’s Head of Property Development South, said: “We have worked hard over the past eight months to understand local views about these plans.

“The feedback we received helped us to make a number of revisions to a scheme which would help regenerate the area and create jobs for local people.

“We are obviously pleased that these revisions have been recognised by the planning officer.

"Of course, the final decision rests with the planning committee next week.”

You can read the report in full here.  The planning committee meets next week (Wednesday, 21 July) and comments on the application are still being accepted – click here to see the application and submit your comments.
