Ashton Vale Wins Town Green Status

Ashton Vale residents are celebrating today after an independent inspector recommended that the entire 42-acre site be designated as a village green, throwing Bristol City FC’s plans for a £92 million stadium into doubt.

If the inspector’s recommendation is approved, it would rule out any future development on the site.

The city council, which backs the plans for a new stadium, must now decide whether to formally register the site as a town green.

It is looking at legal ways of keeping the stadium hopes alive.

Warning that awarding town green status to the whole site would jeopardise the stadium, the redevelopment of the club’s Ashton Gate site, a possible arena and Bristol’s hopes of hosting World Cup matches if England wins the 2018 bid, Lib Dem deputy council leader Simon Cook said: "I am shocked and disappointed at the independent inspector's conclusion.

"Although I respect the fact that she has found that there is a case for awarding a village green, designating the whole 42 acres in question seems utterly unreasonable."

What do you think of the inspector’s recommendation? Are you pleased or disappointed by it?

I can't believe I'm saying this but Dawn P has said something I agree with. Green Town status should not be used just to stop a planning decision. Oh dear!

Another fudge! I wonder who is behind all this, I feel rather suspicious when I read that Sainsburys is up for a negative comment again. As to City and Rover sharing a ground, I thought that died a death many, many years ago

    Stockwoodpete,

I didn't say that BCC owned the site just that they have the responsibility now to either get it developed and bring in millions for the City (Lots of it straight to BCC themselves) or leave it to rot.

    It is effectively at this time being held by the council saying;
"Look you can have this back BCFC and you can develop it and benefit the city and Give the South Wests biggest Sports team the facility they very much need/Want, plus the World Cup and a World Class Music Venue. not to mention the 1000 permanent Jobs and Hundreds of construction Jobs", or,
"you can have this back BCFC oops looks like you can't do anything with it, its worth a fraction of what you paid for it but hey at least these 188 people can walk their dogs across it on their way to Ashton Court better wear their wellies though because its very boggy in places."

It really is unbelievable that So few people can have so much sway in a matter that would effect the entire South of Bristol.

And as for City and Rovers sharing a Ground. Why the hell would we want to do that? City fans don't want to do it, Rovers Fans don't want to do it. They are two very Different Clubs with very different needs. Could you imagine Manchester Utd and Manchester City Sharing a ground?

Why if this is such precious land did the park and ride get built? just seems odd to me.

I think this is the right decision, but it will need a good look at the Inspector's report (200 plus pages) to see the reasoning and the evidence for her conclusion. The benefit to Bristol is partly in saving the Ashton Vale Green Space, but also (I hope) in preventing the 'gift' of the Ald Moores site to the club, and protecting Southville from the Sainsburys Shed. It's not as if the club has lost a stadium. Ashton Gate is still there. It could be improved. Or the club could look elsewhere for more suitable sites, or they could even talk to Rovers about sharing a stadium.

Lanceloto's argument doesn't hold water because the Ashton Vale land doesn't belong to the council, its owners are front companies for the BCFC owners and developers. If this means, though, that Ald. Moores land isn't gifted to the club, it could be added to the 'pot' of open spaces the council's considering selling, and that could relieve some of the pressure on other sites.

Its not a town green Its a field! A town Green holds community events its not "that bit of Scrub-land that I take my Dog to **** on"
Besides at this time when BCC are deciding whether or not to sell off Park land for development surely this can be the first bit of "park-land" they can develop. Want to walk your dog, go to Ashton Court. or the Next field along even. If they protect this bit of land whilst Selling off the parks that people actually have used for the last 100 years Something is Very wrong.
    I confess myself Disappointed.
