Hyperbolic Crochet Reef and Woolly Underwater Wonderland

Paper Village at 200 North street is launching a new unfunded community project to make a hyperbolic crochet reef and swarms of fish and other sea creatures. The reef will be crocheted, knitted and needlefelted

What is hyperbolic crochet . Hyperbolic crochet is something anyone who can crochet can probably already do. When you crochet a circle it sometimes becomes ways instead of flat because you have made too many stitches into outside edge … and this is also how you make hyperbolic planes ( This is the non mathematical simplified version!!) Beautiful coral like structures can be made using these methods

We also want to make lots of different sea creatures – shoals of fish and hosts of other beautiful sea creatures. They will be knitted, crocheted and needlefelted

The Sessions where you pay will include some yarn but you need to bring needles or hooks. (Please note we will not be teaching people to crochet, knit or needle felt apart from on 26th January for needle felting you need to know the very basics of these techniques already – we have courses for this)

If you have group that would like to produce things then please get in touch and we will help you get started. We may be able to come and visit your group to give a quick demonstration to get you started making coral

During May we will build a reef and hang all the fish, weed and creatures in the shop as an installation to be shown during the Southbank arts trail and for some time afterwards. You can eventually have back any of your contributions and at this point we will decide what happens next !
